Do they?

Does my family think I’m a bum? The pressure is building. One thing about living in a collectivist society, comparisons are always being made. Since ‘tis the season to meet relatives and mingle, I have been acutely aware of what people are saying. Well not saying but rather implying by their questions.

When people ask the ‘so are you working now’ question, I automatically put on the apologetic ‘no’ face. But…why should I?? Whoever said that life had to be lived a certain way? Geeze Louise… trust me, it certainly is no fun being constantly compared to a lawyer. This is my ‘best cousin’ I’m talking about. We were really close when younger, not so now though. Truly do not understand the constant need for comparisons.

Oh god talking about comparisons, this family on mom’s side…as soon as they arrived, the daughters whipped out name cards to be distributed around while their dad looked on proudly. Perhaps details would not be a good idea here, but I hope you’re getting the point. I mean we are family, is it really necessary? Oh…there is also the case of a white boy boyfriend being flaunted shamelessly as a status symbol. I mean….give me a break gals. Ok, ok…perhaps I AM judging them a little too harshly…but it seems to me that this family in particular is all about putting up a united front. ENOUGH! Bitching about myself is one thing but bitching about other people is just plain wrong.

I’m suddenly a bit tired of all this. Don’t quite remember the last time I was genuinely living by my ‘as long as you’re happy’ philosophy. Or rather, it is becoming increasingly difficult to do. So my dear girl, time to pack up and leave?

Since there will be a few more days of visiting relatives to do, a change of tactics is required. Will try going back to doing something I might really enjoy. Hanging out with the kids!! Haha…but man…the kids are all about comparing cell phones these days. It is the funniest thing :)
