Unemployed No More

Still finding it a bit difficult to believe, but they offered me a job from yesterday's interview. Training starts tomorrow morning. And through the weekend, so that pretty much ruined my horseback riding plans. Priorities, I guess. Not complaining though, anymore of having to sit at home idling away would be unnecessary torture.

Since the place where I will be working at is a tourist attraction, it should be fun. Will be meeting and talking to people all day. Smiling until my face hurts, but ahh...all part of the job. At least it's something new. I suspect the position is only for the rest of the tourist season which ends late october/ early november. Unless they need people to stay on for whatever Christmas thingy they have planned. We'll just have to wait and see.

My 'employment counsellor' is already hard at work looking for an office job for me. But who wants to work at an office when you can work at a theme park like atmosphere. However, office jobs almost always pay more...

If a guess had to be made, I'd say they hired me for the languages that I (allegedly) speak. Fuck, did I say something about being able to understand basic Japanese? Need to call a Japanese friend to re-learn the basic phrases. Cantonese...hmmm not so bad except that I'd have to learn to speak like a Hongkie. Good thing my roommate is Chinese, will have to drill her for the basic mandarin phrases too. Malay and Indonesian should be okay.

Essential Phrases to Learn

- Hello/ Greetings
- How many people in your party
- You'll need to pay----
- Is this your first visit here?
- We have ---
- Don't forget to check out---
- If you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask any member of our staff
- Thank you, enjoy your visit

And of course, big smiles all around. I guess in the hospitality industry, what you need to learn first and foremost is to smile.
