Idiots!!

It saddens me to see that religious issues have, yet again, come to the forefront of Malaysian media.

Not unlike Canadian society, Malaysia is made up of people from different races and religious backgrounds. While there hasn't been a huge clash since May of 1969, I cannot help but admit that racial tension seems to be building over the years.

This is exactly why I have an issue with the fact that the syariah law is being imposed on the Malaysian society. Yes, Malaysia is officially an Islamic country but the beauty of it was that the people did not seem to segregate themselves by race/religion. I know I didn't. In fact, many of my dearest friends were and are Malays.

In recent years, things seem to have changed quite a bit. Perhaps there has always been a segregation, or perhaps by getting a bit older I have come to see things differently, I do not know for sure. But I am accutely aware of my own irritability when it comes to muslim fundamentalists trying to impose laws on Malaysians, seemingly having forgotten (or purposely trying to ignore?) the fact that the nation is made up of about 30-40% minority groups. What idiots!

The most recent course of action in their rampage to "save everyone" includes banning the Black Metal Culture because it is said to go against the religion. Fine. While many muslims themselves (one possible exmaple) may not agree with this, this is not the issue that is bothering me. Simply because - I am not muslim.

The time this becomes my problem is when these stupid laws are imposed on other groups of the population to whom the syariah law does not even apply! I for one, do not recognize it. Don't even know very much about it, as a matter of fact. But what I do know is its impact on the Malaysian society as a whole. Directly or otherwise.

Now all of a sudden, even non-muslims who are into black metal will be looked upon as 'bad' people. Sheesh! By no means am I all for black metal culture. Again, I don't even know very much about it. But what I'm saying is that we should be given a choice. And even when you want to get rid of a particular behaviour in society, BANNING is not the way to go! In the long run, how many things can you ban effectively? These, in my opinion, are very short sighted strategies. Sad to say, this is not unlike many of Malaysia's policies in dealing with problems in society.

Another example of this is how we're dealing with the case of a woman being forced to do ear squats naked in a police lock up in front of a policewoman not too long ago. They're banning ear squats? Like that's the problem?? If that's not an example of short sightedness/single mindedness, then I really do not know what is. Idiots! These are such ancient ways of dealing with a problem that I'm speechless.

And don't even get me started on not allowing people to hold hands/kiss/hug in public areas. They have guards patrolling the parks in the evening for god's sake! Again, coming from a non-muslim perspective, don't impose your laws on us.

There is also the story about a girl risking her life jumping from one apartment building to the next when people from an islamic authority or another came a knockin on her door. All this because she was afraid of being caught alone with her boyfriend in the same room. She is muslim but here's my issue. After flashing a stupid pass and threathening my friend (who is non-muslim) with god knows what, she had to let them into her house for a little look around.

Leave us alone, fuckers.

If I wasn't a blasted racist before, you're turning me into one!
