Where: History Class
What: World War 2 and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Towards the end of class, the instructor wanted to know what we thought about 'The Bomb' and if it was necessary for the US to have used it when other means seemed viable.
This guy, let us call him crazy-millitary-dude (CMD), said something that in some way or another offended every person in the room! He said something to the effect of:
"Yeah I think it was absolutely necessary. Those small, tiny little men (Japanese) were crazy. They were indoctrinated to stab themselves to death when faced with dishonour. They were tough little motherfuckers. If the bombs were not used, lots more of the US boys would have gone down. And lots more Japanese people would have died in the long run."
While doodling on my notes and half listening to the conversation, I sat up right away when he began to speak. What did he just say? Is this guy for real? Haha...of course after his statement, many hand shot up in the air. This girl criticized him for not knowing very much about the Japanese culture.
CMD answered by saying that he is half-Japanese.
It was the funniest thing.
Some background information then. From the first day of class, CMD struck me as a person who can never shut up. He is one of those people who will fill in the silence with unnecessary chatter about nothing in particular. At first I did not like him. Then as the course progressed, I realized that he does know lots about history (being a history major) and is not afraid of voicing his opinions. Half Chinese, half Japanese, he speaks English like a native speaker without much of a foreign accent. Seeing that he likes sharing personal information, the class also knows that he is a military guy. Quite decent if he keeps his big mouth in check.
Today was the unleashing of the truth. I KNEW he was one of those. That's the thing about people who talk a lot. Allow them to speak long enough and all their weaknesses shall be revealed.
