Land of Immigrants

Vancouver truly is.

Mostly driving around, I do not walk the streets of my neighbourhood very often. Today after a month of not doing laundry, I gave in. Went to a coin-operated laundromat. The atmosphere was typical of a tv-series depiction of life as an Asian immigrant family in the West. Grandparents, mom, dad and a child who speaks English better than the rest of the family put together.

If I'm not mistaken they are from China. Not very affluent by appearence but surely they have a big fat bank account here, and one in China to boot. Just because they don't speak English does not mean they are to be looked down upon. Chinese people are survivors, that much you have to agree.

Having recently met a Malaysian family here, I adopted them :) They live in Richmond which is where all the Chinese people live. And I do mean all. Well, even in Burnaby and Surrey...everywhere actually. It seems that multi-culturalism has been taken to a new level here. This is only talking about the Chinese population in town. Since my 'adopted' family lives in Richmond, I have been hanging out there quite a bit these days. It's quite awesome. You get too-many-to-count hangout places that are open til 3-4 am, 5 shopping malls clustered along one street, an entire street dedicated to food, food and more food. Yeah, asia!!

They often ask me - why the hell are you living way out in Burnaby? To which I reply - I didn't know better :P
